10 Reasons Cable TV Channel Lineups Vary by Provider

Have you ever wondered why cable TV providers  have  different channel lineups? Why are there certain channels included in their basic package in this location, but not in that location? It turns out that there are a number of factors which dictate the lineup you’ll see from your provider, and we’re here to share them with you. The following are 10 reasons why channel lineups vary by cable provider.

1. Local Agreement – When a cable provider offers their service in a local region, they contract with that locality for certain so-called ‘must-carry’ programming, such as public access or commercial channels (ie. infomercial programming).
2. Demographics – Focus groups employed by the cable provider will assess which programming is most popular in a given service area, and assemble their channel lineup accordingly.
3. Open Channel Availability – You may be accustomed to finding, say, ESPN on cable channel 6, but after moving you find a local channel there when searching the channel guide in your new home. It turns out that some of the lower channels, which tend to be the most-coveted, may or may not be available to a nationally broadcast station such as ESPN, and have been set aside for local programming.
4. Regional Blackouts – Sporting events are subject to local agreements and can be blacked out under certain circumstances. If you’re a St. Louis fan, and wanted to see the Cards play the Reds on Fox next Sunday, for instance, you may be getting the Braves game instead while you’re in Nashville.
5. Channel Definition – Depending on the type of receiver you have – which is determined by the type of TV you’re connecting it to – your channels are going to be a bit different. HD channels will be included in your lineup if you’re watching on an high-definition TV. Also, a bank of channels designated for 3D television might also be included for subscribers so equipped.
6. Contractual Disputes – Some networks negotiate their contracts with cable providers individually. If there is some contention as to the terms of a contract, that network may not be carried unless and until the dispute is settled.
7. Cost – Not all cable providers are able to afford the same channel lineups. Some may need to offer a more modest suite of packages due to budgetary limits.
8. Subscriber Demand – In addition to demographic analysis, local providers may augment their basic lineup to satisfy local demand for alternative programming.
9. Channel Capacity – Cable providers may have to adjust their lineups according to the number of cable channels that they are able to carry, base on their facilities, subscriber equipment, and local agreements.
10. On-Demand – Many providers offer a menu of programs including theatrical movies, popular TV series and concerts, which can be ordered by the subscriber for viewing at any time. Subscription to such services, and menu selection will also affect your channel lineup.
