The new big news in the financial world is Google’s merger with Motorola, but what effect will it have on you, the consumer? One effect that you might not expect is on your cable box.

If you have cable, there is a good chance that your box was manufactured by Motorola. In fact, it was made by the branch that Google just purchased. What does that mean? Well, that means that Google TV could soon be a part of your life.

Never heard of Google TV? Well, you’re not alone. Kevin Sintumuang said of Google TV in his Wall Street Journal review that, “The potential is as big as, well, the Internet, but right now Google TV is a bit of a tease.” Despite the poor progress Google has made with its TV department, this takeover of Motorola could provide a new avenue. Imagine it- Google TV preloaded into your cable box.

Is this a bad thing? It depends on who you ask. The current reviews of Google TV are overwhelmingly negative, but that is mostly due to a lack of content. If the takeover goes as planned, content will no longer be an issue. Best of all, Google TV software is probably light-years ahead of your current cable box software. Additionally, the cooperation between Motorola and Google could allow them to customize the hardware so that it better integrates with Google TV.

Motorola’s Medios software, which helps users manage content across multiple devices and systems, is an added advantage. Imagine being able to connect to your cable box using your phone or laptop? One way or another, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha told analysts “there is a great convergence happening between the mobile world and the content that enters the home,” and he predicted the newly combined company would “accelerate that convergence and deliver products, which will delight customers, quite frankly.”

So overall, this could be a good thing for cable TV customers. Better software, more integrated hardware, and an internet-friendly cable box could open the doors to a whole new cable world.
